produced from natural raw materials. continuing our efforts to bring innovative new products to market, we are proud to launch the new polymer starch material (psm) product ranges. produced from renewable starch base, these patented, award winning bio-polymers meet the strictest of standards including the new harmonised en13432 biodegradation standard. in addition, these products also meet the en14045 and en14046, iso 14855, ok compost and the fda 176.170 requirements for food contact use. the psm hl102 and hl201 range is ideal for extrusion moulding and thermo- forming applications producing certified 100% biodegradable items for everyday use. this polymer has been used to produce items such as disposable cutlery, plates, drinks cups, coffee cup lids, stirrers to name but a few. the wide operating temperature range (0 to 100 degrees c) of the psm polymers open up a number of possible applications including microwave-safe food packaging. we have also produced biodegradable foam 'peanuts' for loose fill using our hl102 polymer and steam extrusion these new biodegradable polymers offer high performance and an economic option for the production of biodegradable items. if required, these two series can be blended with traditional polyolefins (e.g. polyethylene or polypropylene) to produce degradable plastics for a variety of applications. the hybrids formed can have very similar operating parameters as the 100% polyolefin and as is the case with the homopolymer hl102 and hl201 there is no need for expensive retro-fitting of the equipment used to form the polymer. the resin bead form (hl102 series) and sheet form (hl201 series) blended with traditional oil-derived olefins polyethylene / polypropylene are suitable for film extrusion and can be made into bags etc. with a 50:50, 60:40 or 70:30 ratio of olefin plastic to biodegradable polymer, being typical and having the added benefit of introducing renewable polymers into tradtional applications. please note that the addition of oil-based plastics alters the biodegradable composition and so can mean that although the resultant hydrid is ultimately degradable and compostable they may not meet the specific conversion to bio-mass requirements of the en13432 and astm d6400 certifications which requires 90% and 60% respecitively to degrade to water and carbon dioxide in 6 months. on the other hand our new hl301 range is a 100% starch-based polymer specially designed to produce very thin films that exhibit high tensile strength yet still conform to the requirements of the en13432 and astm d6400 standards. these polymers also meet the fda food contact requirements 176.170 and have the added benefit in their natural form, of high opacity, a desireable property when used to protect the contents of packaging produced from this polymer from sunlight or uv degradation. they can be used in the production of food packaging and in bags destined for a whole range of uses. they exhibit similar strength to more usual olefin plastics when formed into packaging and carrier bags. the hl301 series is designed to be used as a 100% homopolymer for film and speciality micro-thin thermo-forming applications. in their natural state, the psm polymers are beige / off white in colour and readily accept colourants, opening up a myriad of potential applications. isc are pleased to offer suitable fda approved pigments for this application. degradation results under normal moist, conditions in the presence of natural micro-organisms the breakdown of our bio-polymers can be very rapid we believe that the transition from oil-based polymers to renewable polymers should be as seemless as possible and so our polymers can be processed on traditional olefin processing equipment, without the need for expensive retrofitting. we also believe that saving the earth should not cost the earth and so you will find that these new polymers are not as expensive as you might think. neither do we compromise on product performance and so products made from our polymers are observed to be microwave safe and capable of withstanding operating temperatures up to 130 degrees celcius , ideal for food contact packaging and disposable cutlery in fact, almost any item that traditionally has been moulded from polyethylene or polypropylene you can now consider producing this from our biodegradable plastics. there is now no reason why disposable cutlery and tableware cannot be truly disposable and without negative impact on our environment, when even the bag used for the packaging can be made
